氫化蓖麻油，是由蓖麻油經過氫化所製得。篦麻又名草麻子或紅大麻子，原產於印度。篦麻籽經過遇熱、紫外線或用甲醛處理後所得的第一道油用於醫學上，其第二道油則是再透過礦化或氫化後而形成性質溫和的乳化劑或溶劑，也常用於保養品上。因為此油特性為粘性好、凝固點低不易受溫度影響且潤滑度佳，適合作為保養化妝品原料。
而在我們日常洗護髮品中在加入氫化蓖麻油後不單清潔度100分，預防頭皮屑，更可在洗髮時輕輕按摩頭皮刺激毛囊、促進生髮，更因PEG-40保濕效果使髮色更亮麗，髮質也更濃密輕柔。PEG-40為植物性油脂含有容易讓肌膚吸收的甘油三酸酯，進而達到養護保濕且其抗菌抗炎作用!
PEG-40 氫化蓖麻油做乳化劑和表面活性劑使用，化妝水類產品加入後會較為滑順，甚至有相當的起泡性。於化妝水中含量多在 1% 以下，一般健康的皮膚對此濃度通常不會感到刺激，但當皮膚受傷、發炎、起疹、角質偏薄時，部分可溶化劑就可能會造成刺痛、發癢現象。

PEG 40 hydrogenated castor oil is used in cosmetics as a solubiliser, emulsifier, surfactant and emollient. It is derived from Castor oil and is useful in producing products that disperse in water whilst offering good moisturizing properties.
PEG 40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil is the Polyethylene Glycol derivatives of Hydrogenated Castor Oil, It has a mild fatty odor and it functions as a surfactant, a solubilizer, an emulsifier, an emollient, a cleansing agent, and a fragrance ingredient when added to cosmetics or personal care product formulations.
PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil is soluble in both water and oil and is traditionally used to emulsify and solubilize oil-in-water formulations. Its foam-enhancing properties make it ideal for use in liquid cleansers, and its soothing and softening emollient quality makes it a popular addition to formulations for moisturizers and hair care cosmetics.
